The Mortician’s Daughter: One Foot in the Grave

Her dad’s job is with the dead . . . and he’s bringing his work home with him.

Once again, seventeen-year-old Riley Smith is the new kid in school and her dad’s career has her back to being dubbed a freak. Truth is, she’s a much bigger freak than her classmates think. The only company she keeps these days is with the dead who follow her Dad home from work. She can see them. She can speak to them. And Fate seems to think she can help them solve their last problems so that they can move on to the other side. Which is odd, because with the loss of her mother and her father’s alcoholism, she’s got enough problems of her own.

But nothing could prepare her for the tormented young spirit who darkens Riley’s door. The young woman’s death wasn’t the accident everyone believes. Soon Riley finds herself face-to-face with the killer, and her only protection comes in the form of another spirit, Hayden, a boy her age with a heart-melting smile and understanding eyes that make her feel safe. If she can escape becoming the killer’s next victim, Riley knows she’ll have to help Hayden move on too, but what if she can’t let him go?

My interview with C.C. Hunter, AKA, Christie Craig

  1. The Mortician’s Daughter is about a girl who talks to dead people. Why ghosts?  Why a Young Adult novel?

Because they scare the shit out of me.  And I mean both teens and ghosts.  LOL.  Originally, I was only writing my Christie Craig humorous romantic suspense novels.  However, an editor from St. Martins had read my work and contacted my agent asking if I would consider writing a young adult paranormal series.  She had the idea for a paranormal camp.  I’d never written a paranormal or a young adult novel, so I asked her why she thought I could do this.  Her answer was: Because you are a smart ass and teens love smart asses. My reply: My mama told me that’d never get me anywhere.

My next question was: Can I have ghosts in it? You see, several times in my life I felt I’d been visited by someone from the other side.  The editor agreed to ghosts, and that led to the ten book Shadow Falls series about a paranormal camp and characters who could see ghosts.  That series ended last October, but then I had the idea for The Mortician’s Daughter series.  I wanted a bridge–one that left vampires and shapeshifters behind, but carried my fans closer to a contemporary style, but still had the thread of paranormal about ghosts. In addition to this series, I also sold a contemporary young adult novel about a girl who needs a heart transplant, called This Heart of Mine. It will be out in hard cover Feb. 27th.

  1. You write sexy romantic suspense novels as Christie Craig, and while they are funny, they often tackle tough subjects like betrayal, death, and even child abuse. How do your C.C. Hunter young adult books compare in heat levels and difficult subject matters?

From the beginning, I wanted to write books that resonated with the today’s teens. So I don’t pretend that sex, drugs, and alcohol don’t exist.  I write about characters making smart decisions.  If I have sex on the page, and I’ve only done that a few times, it’s PG13. That’s not to say that there isn’t sexual tension.  Nor do I shy away from tough subjects.  Death, grief, murder.  Today’s teens have seen and dealt with so much.  They don’t want books that are watered down, or written by someone wearing rose colored glasses.  They want real. And I try to give it to them.

  1. The Mortician’s Daughter: One Foot in the Grave is a trilogy. When are the next two novels releasing?

Right now, the books are scheduled to come out six or seven months apart.  So May 2018 and November 2018.  I just recently got my covers and I love them.

Hayden looks over at me.

“Hi.” He’s still bright, still hot, sporting a tight black tee and jeans, but that’s not what has me gawking.

It’s the fact that Pumpkin’s okay with him being here. Or more than okay, the cat’s practically drooling. He only drools on me. Never, not once, has he befriended a spirit. Sylvania tried everything to get him to come to him. He adored cats, and it was because of his own cat that he wouldn’t move on. I had to go collect the gray tabby and find it a new, loving home. Only then did the sweet old man pass over.

I sit up, bend my knees, and wrap my arms around them. “Pumpkin likes you.”

He grins. “That’s because I’m charming.” He continues to stare at me. “Did you know you kinda snore, kinda purr when you’re asleep.”

I frown.

“It’s cute. Not loud or anything.” There’s a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. “I had to get really close to hear it.”

Really close? I sit there imagining him really close to me in bed and I get tingles, and not the kind I normally get from spirits. I open my mouth to say something, but there are no words waiting to come out. I’m never tongue-tied with spirits. It’s as if instinctively I know it’s my job to help them.

“And I also noticed you only put polka dots on one of your toes. What’s with that?”

I hug my knees tighter. I wonder how long he’s been here checking me out. “Maybe I just wanted one polka-dotted toe.”

His smile deepens. “It’s odd, but I’ll buy it.”

“How nice of you.” I sound annoyed and I am, not so much at him, but at my response to him. I glance at the clock. Dad should be home anytime.

“Your dad texted. He’s going to be late.”

I gasp a little. Can he read my mind? None of the other ghosts could. But I’ve already concluded that he’s different. Oh, please don’t let him read my mind. “How did you know I was thinking about my dad?”

“I didn’t. I just… you looked at the time.”

“And you read my texts.”

“Not intentionally. I was lying in bed beside you, and the phone on the bedside table flashed.”

“Remember those rules I mentioned?”

“Yeah,” he says.

“Well, add this one. You don’t get in bed with me. And don’t watch me sleep. It’s creepy.”

He stands up, but his gaze stays on me. “I didn’t touch you.” His smile turns mischievous again. “It was tempting, but I behaved.”

New Release: IN FOR THE WIN Coming Nov. 7th! Exclusive Excerpt Here…

To win his heart, she’ll have to give him the one thing that could drive him away—the truth…

Kyle Scott’s talent for fighting paved the way for a career he never wanted, but needed to survive. Five years later, he doesn’t recognize the man he’s become. All his focus and energy has been poured into raising his little sister, leaving no time or interest for anything beyond a casual hook-up—until he meets a woman who sends his life spiraling out of control.

Penelope Cantrel isn’t looking for love, but she’s always ready for a good time. If she keeps everyone at a distance, they can’t discover how broken she is, or the secrets she’s running from. When she crosses paths with the sexy MMA fighter, Kyle’s reputation as a cage-banging manwhore doesn’t concern her. She isn’t interested in a commitment. But after their white-hot attraction leads to a night of mind-blowing sex, neither of them will ever be the same again.

When Pen starts receiving threatening messages, her deepest fears are realized as she becomes the obsession of a man who will kill to possess her. Concerned for her safety, Kyle offers to pose as her boyfriend to deter her unwanted admirer, but his heated touches and those not-so-innocent kisses don’t feel like he’s acting. Could the infamous playboy be falling for her?

As the threat against Pen escalates, her stalker is closer than they thought. Kyle is the only thing standing between her and a madman, but she fears trusting him with her secrets could be a fatal mistake.

Tonight, when Pen had crawled into his bed, Kyle foolishly hoped she was feeling it too. But as hot as the sex had been, something was still missing. An emotional connection? He didn’t really know, because he’d never felt or wanted one before. But he’d sensed she was holding a part of herself back.

Their disconnect hadn’t been physical. Fuck, he’d never felt so much pleasure—ungloved and coming inside her. The sensation, the intensity…there were no words. Even now he was growing hard just from the memory. No, that definitely had not been their problem. The issue, he feared, was emotional. And the struggle to synch Pen’s body with her mind was going to be a challenge. Question was, could he do it? Because he was starting to wonder if his efforts wouldn’t be fought at every turn.

Something in her past had broken her. He didn’t know what, how, or by whom, but her reaction to him earlier left little doubt in his mind. And even the possibility that she’d been abused—physical?—sexually?—filled him with such protective rage, a part of him almost feared discovering the truth. But how could he be the glue to help mend her broken pieces if he couldn’t figure out how they fit back together? She was a puzzle, a complex enigma he wanted to solve because deep down he knew the prize would be her heart.

Pen shook her head, looking utterly and completely lost. “I don’t know, Kyle. This isn’t supposed to be real. And it scares me that you’re changing the rules.”

“And you didn’t change the rules when you climbed into my bed? What the fuck was that about, then? You think because you made them, you can break them without consequence? Or is it because I fuck around that you think you get a pass—that this means nothing to me.”

As each word flew out of his mouth, he could see it ratcheting her fear. And yet he couldn’t seem to shut the fuck up. Her defenses were high and there was no getting past those walls, but he kept battering them with his verbal ground and pound assault. He wasn’t leaving this room until one of them tapped. Unfortunately, he was starting to get concerned that someone was going to be him.

She shook her head in denial, stepping back. And because he was a fighter, he advanced—countering her move for move until her retreat was halted by the bed.

“It was a mistake… This was a mistake…”

“Oh, now it’s a mistake? Because I’m not interested in being your boy-toy? Because you’re scared I might actually want something from you, like, oh…an ounce a trust?—a glimmer of emotion? Something to tell me that I might mean something more to you than a cock to get off on!”

Her eyes narrowed, little hands tightening into fists, and he knew he’d pushed her too far.

“What the fuck, Kyle? I thought I was the one with the vagina! Just because we fucked that doesn’t give you a one-way pass into my life. You don’t have any more right to my secrets than I do yours. You don’t see me trying to pry into your private life, do you? We’re friends—with benefits—and if you want us to stay that way then respect my goddamn boundaries.”

“With benefits? Thanks anyway, I think I’ll pass. I can fuck anytime I want, I don’t need you for that.” He turned to storm out, but her parting words won that round and had him tapping out.

“I was talking about the friends part…”
